Westlock County Moves Forward With Recreation Upgrades in Master Plan

Westlock County in Alberta council approved its Recreation Needs Assessment and Facility Master Plan on March 26, outlining a strategy for future development and infrastructure improvements.

The plan, drafted by RC Strategies, will guide capital planning and address maintenance needs for recreation facilities across the county.

The plan identifies Rainbow Park, Long Island Lake Municipal Campground, and Tawatinaw Valley Ski Hill as priority areas for improvements.

Community engagement sessions, facility assessments, and research shaped the final recommendations, according to Adrienne Finnegan, community services coordinator.

The public had opportunities to review the findings through surveys and open houses. One final survey generated about seven responses, with some comments expressing concerns that the county was not doing enough for pickleball facilities.

Reeve Wiese pushed back on that claim, stating, “So it’s hard to hear that we are not doing enough for pickleball.”

According to an article published by Town and Country Today, during the council meeting, Coun. Stuart Fox-Robinson questioned the integrity of the survey results and asked RC Strategies consultant Mike Roma if respondents were verified as county residents.

Roma confirmed that IP address tracking ensured no duplicate submissions and that responses primarily came from within the county.
